Samsung Galaxy A16 5G – $199 The new Galaxy A16 5G isn't the very cheapest Galaxy up for declaration, but it's darn close. That mean it is built on budget tier hardware and, well, there are sacrifices to be made. Therefore, we need to identify possible flaws or dealbreakers along the way and figure out whether or not the phone is worth getting.
Clocking into the review proper, we should point out that this is a review of the Samsung 5G Mobiles model and our findings might not be applicable to the regular Galaxy A16 4G due to its different/ chipset.
Design
No doubt they come from the modern era of Samsung phones, such as the Galaxy A16 5G. Its unmistakable design language lights up a mile ahead of you. And by distinctive we mean more or less the triple vertical camera layout on the rear without a contiguous camera island. Apart from that, A16 5G resembles any other latest phone. The frame is mostly flat with nicely rounded corners that don't dig into your palms. The middle frame has subtle and soft angles on the back and front sides for a better in-hand feel. Clean, flowing natural lines, nothing aggressive or sharp about the styling and shape here.
Speaking of the back, it also happens to be a total fingerprint magnet. You are never ever going to be able to clean the shiny plastic coating.
It might be plastic, but it feels surprisingly sturdy. In reality, there is zero flex in the phone's frame and no hollow-sounding quality.
The Galaxy A16 5G is available in four color options: Blue Black, Light Gray, Gold or Light Green. To our eye, we feel like the Black Blue plays black-er than blue.
Let's talk materials. The back of the phone which is made from plastic, and the middle frame just like we referred to. Plastic is strong, light, and doesn't dent the same way metal does or shatter like glass - it also passes signals cleanly.
Some kind of glass is continues on the front Galaxy A16 5G. Samsung, unfortunately, doesn't detail what type. There is no screen protector applied to the phone out of box, either.
On the ingress protection side this time, even though you'll get an IP54 rating in Galaxy A16 5G, it's still a basic one. That said, our units SIM tray does appear to still be outfitted with quite thick rubber gaskets and so perhaps the phone would even survive a brief dunk.
Display
The Super AMOLED panel packs a 6.7-inch Galaxy A16 5G display. The display supports standard FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2340 pixels) with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. That translates to a pixel density of about 385, which is plenty sharp enough in the flesh.
Samsung claims 800 nits of sustained whole display brightness for the Galaxy A16 5G and we easily surpassed that at 824 in our controlled testing. It isn't the most powerful, especially nowadays but we found it adequate for outdoor use.
The A16 5G hides a proper light sensor underneath the bottom side of the display as previously reported. It does theoretically an entirely respectable job and putting the brightness right. You'd likely want to keep it on anyway as, without auto resolution, the phone achieved only 413 nits of max brightness in manual mode when cranking the slider to its maximum.
The refresh rate of the Galaxy A16 5G is at 90 Hz. By today standards that is basic but we still take anything above 60. There are two display settings modes available. One of those just locks the refresh rate to 60Hz which allows for power savings and the other one just locks the refresh rate to 90Hz. No automatic refresh rate switching
